Located on the south-west shore of Ashley River and north of the Stono River, West Ashley is a one of Charleston's most scenic and distinct. Home to just over 57,400 residents, West Ashley is just a short 20-minute drive into downtown Charleston. Most of the town's original growth occurred in the 1950s but West Ashley saw its biggest development boom about 20 years later. With more established neighborhoods and a less crowded feel, West Ashley is home to the region’s largest indoor shopping mall. The Citadel Mall is one of the city’s biggest employers and offers a movie theater along with plenty of restaurant options.
Situated mostly inside the city limits of Charleston with a few sections in unincorporated Charleston County, West Ashley is served by West Ashley High School. The city also has seven public elementary schools, four public middle schools and a number of private high schools including Porter-Gaud School. With its close proximity to downtown Charleston, there are endless activities for every member of the community to enjoy! The Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens, Annual Cooper River Bridge Run, Lowcountry Strawberry Festival, and the Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival are just a few of Charleston’s fun featured events.
