With just under 3,000 happy residents, Folly Beach has a small community feel and some of the most beautiful shorefront views. Situated just 11 miles south of downtown Charleston, the island town resides along the Atlantic Ocean. Folly Beach is known to locals as “the Edge of America” given its popular surfing spots and lively Center Street. As the beaches main road, Center Street houses many wonderful restaurants, surf shops, offices, gift shops and radiant bars. Some of the delicious dining options include the Oyster House on Market, Charleston Crab House, The Washout, Blu Restaurant & Bar, Loggerheads Beach Grill and the Folly Beach Crab Shack. Before heading for the great food, Folly Beach offers plenty of daytime activities while soaking up the sun! At Folly Beach Park residents can picnic using their provided shelters, grills and showers. Fishing, boating, paddleboarding and surfing are just a few of the outdoor amenities residents can enjoy at Folly Beach.
If you’ve never tried surfing before then take a surf lesson and experience some of the best waves that the beach has to offer. Located in Charleston County, another one of the towns must see attractions is the Folly Beach Pier which extends over 1,045 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. At the pier, residents’ favorite happenings are saltwater fishing, walking and bird watching. In addition, annual dances and fishing tournaments are held on the pier where there are rod rentals, restaurants, and gift & tackle shops. The Morris Island Lighthouse is also a favored historical site for both the locals and vacationers. Although the lighthouse doesn’t shine today, it remains over 161 feet tall and was once powered by a Fresnel lens using lard oil. Folly Beach has numerous events for the entire community all year-round. There is endless live music throughout the year, Coastal Bird Exploration events, holiday celebrations and even the Tides of March Arts & Crafts Show Competition. Also happening in March is the Save the Light’s Annual Gala & Auction where residents have fun while raising money for a great cause. Whether you’re a year-round or part-time resident, Folly Beach will always continue to have exciting activities and events to enjoy for the entire community.
